Winter, Week 2, Year 1
This week is Christmas week and I have a lot I want to do before the big day. I want to get my decorating done on Christmas Eve with George and Alexandra, then have everybody over for drinks. Christmas Day, I’d love to see Ally and George and finally for Boxing Day, more games a small gathering with the two of them again. Finally, it’s New Years Eve at the end of the week and I’d love to see everybody before then.
I sat down with George to talk to him about the plans. He and Ally would love to come and spend time with me, so they’ll leave Ethan with William and Emily for a few hours.
As I’d hoped, George and Ally came round to help me decorate the tree. I was very pleased with the result; red and gold has always been my favourite combination for the decorations and the whole thing looked marvellous. I’ve placed some presents underneath for Ally and George, since both have promised to come round tomorrow. They’ve placed their presents to me there, too.
I had quite a bit of fun decorating the rest of the house, both outside and in. My woodwork projects are bringing in quite a good bit of money and I’m excited to really celebrate Christmas well this year. It always used to be a difficult time of year for me and Ally when we were children. I’d love to make it special this year.
As promised, George and Ally came round later on Christmas morning to exchange gifts and pull crackers. I got a rather entertaining cracker with a most amusing joke. I was very taken with the little plushie creature Ally bought me and in return, she was thrilled with the packet of herb seeds I bought for her. She’s often talked about a herb garden so this might give her the push. I also bought a small blue teddy bear for Ethan and a mystery novel for George. To see Ally smiling made my day.
I spent the rest of Christmas day playing in the snow. It’s something I was never allowed to do as a boy and I can’t tell you how much fun I had, building snowmen and making snow angels. I haven’t laughed so much in years.
On Boxing Day, George and Alexandra came round again and we had a wonderful day singing carols, eating the chocolate chip cookies I’d baked and watching the television. It was a lot quieter and more peaceful than the Boxing Days I remember as a child. I suppose that will all change when Ethan is older.
I have decided I’d like to get fitter next year. I spent so much of this year cooped up in the house, desperately trying to secure electricity for everybody before the winter set in and I never did really enjoy the summer. So this next year, I want to work out every day, go for a run regularly and generally keep fitter. There’s no time like the present, as my aunt always said.
Beckwell really is beautiful. I never noticed it before but as winter is slowly turning into spring, I’m noticing the beauty everywhere I look. I think next year is going to be really beautiful. For all of us.
